The signature initiative of United Way of South Wood & Adams Counties' “Women United” is called the Learning for Life Reading Mentor Program. Our goal is to ensure that all children in south Wood County are reading at the proficient level by the end of third grade. Our schools are doing a great job, but they cannot do it alone.
We, as a community, need to wrap our arms around these children and offer them the guidance, support and mentoring that they need. We have mentors working with kindergarten-third grade students at Port Edwards School District: Ed Heuer Elementary, and at Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools: Grant, Mead, and Washington Elementary. The lives of these students are being impacted every time the mentor enters their classroom.
