United Way of South Wood & Adams Counties hosted its twelfth annual Great Book Giveaway from June 8-15, 2021 to help children stay up to speed on their reading during their time away from school.
Each location had volunteers read their favorite books to the children who attended; and afterwards each child was able to select free books to take home and keep. The books were collected during book drives held in previous years.
All children and youth (from ages birth to 12 years), parents, grandparents, caregivers, and day care providers were invited to attend this free event. Families came to the event together; and day care providers were welcome to come and bring along all the children in their care. In total, there were just over 130 children in attendance who received over 460 books!
The purpose of the Great Book Giveaway is to get books into the hands of kids to read and enjoy during the summer months. Kids who read in the summer are less likely to fall behind when the new school year begins.
